The Faculty of Dentistry as a separate unit exists since 1958, but in 1894 the teaching of the course of dentistry to students of the Medical Faculty of Lviv University began. The first department of dentistry was founded on the basis of the dental clinic, which operated since 1905, in 1913, the professor, doctor of medical sciences, and in the future – correspondent member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR A. Tseshinsky. He led the department until 1941. Scientific research of his team was recognized far beyond Galicia. After the Second World War, the course of dentistry at the Department of Hospital Surgery of the Lviv Medical Institute was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor O.V.Koval, who in 1958 was one of the active founders of the Faculty of Dentistry, as well as his dean. In 1972 Professor Y.V.Gotsko was elected Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, from 1992 to 2004 the deanery was headed by Professor I.M.Got; From 2004 till 2012 the dean was Professor R.M.Stupnytsky. Since June 2012 the duties of the dean are performed by the professor, doctor of medical sciences Р.З. Ohonovsky.
The Faculty of Dentistry today has 10 departments, of which 4 are profile. The potential of dental chairs consists of 13 professors, 11 doctors of medical sciences, 53 assistant professors, 84 candidates of sciences, 45 assistants. For 55 years here have received diplomas of more than 6500 dermatologists, students from 47 countries of the world studied. Almost 1000 students are studying at the Faculty of Dentistry, including about 70 foreigners. The faculty trains specialists in the educational qualification level “specialist” in accordance with the educational and qualification characteristics and the educational-professional curriculum program on the specialty “Dentistry”.
Students receive basic knowledge at the theoretical and clinical departments during the first two years. Primary medical skills are acquired by students during manufacturing practice (for the care of patients and nursing) at the bases of clinical departments and health care institutions of Lviv, Volynskaya, Transcarpathian and Rivne oblasts.
Students have the opportunity to undergo clinical training using modern advanced methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of patients with dental care. In the educational, scientific medical diagnostic process, the possibilities of modern computer technology and the latest equipment are widely used. Practical skills and knowledge of the dentist are acquired by students while studying in four profile departments over the next three years. During the training, students make licensed test exams: “Krok-1” on the third and “Krok-2” on the fifth year. After completing the state comprehensive practical-oriented exam on the fifth year and receiving a diploma, graduates continue their studies in an internship on the specialty of a dentist. The best students, on the recommendation of the Academic Council of the University, are referred for further improvement of professional mastery in the magistracy, postgraduate study, and clinical residency.

Improvement of treatment methods for children with congenital defects of the upper lip and palate, patients with fractures of the jaws, oncological diseases, on osteogenesis (Department of Surgical Dentistry).
Working out and approbation of methods of treatment of inflammatory diseases of periodontium with prolonged-release drugs (Department of Therapeutic Dentistry).
Orthopedic treatment of major dental diseases and the development of new technologies and methods for the manufacture of dentures (Department of Orthopedic Dentistry).
Epidemiology of stomatological diseases in children and connection of oral cavity with general-somatic diseases, prevention of caries of teeth (department of Stomatology of childhood).
Improvement of diagnosis and development of effective methods of treating the pathology of the middle and inner ear, congenital and acquired hearing loss in children; study of the state of the middle ear in the wounds with congenital tenderness of the palate and lips; development of new methods of treatment of allergic and bacterial rhinosinusitis of the pathology of the lymphadenoid ring of the pharynx; studying the epidemiology of laryngeal cancer diseases, improving the methods of early diagnosis of laryngeal cancer metastases, treatment methods; Saving surgery on the bone skeleton of the nose and the sinuses; phytotherapy and reflexotherapy of inflammatory processes of the upper respiratory tract and ears (the chamber of otorhinolaryngology).
Development of new surgical interventions; plastic and reconstructive surgery; tissue transplantation; Surgical anatomy of the circulatory system (Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy).
Justification and implementation of methods of regenerative physical therapy of pathological processes, accompanied by phenomena of ionic membranopathy; study of the clinical effectiveness of new psychotropic drugs; development of trainings on social skills in the rehabilitation of patients with mental disorders (Department of Psychiatry, Psychology and Sexology).
Actual problems of terminology in the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages in higher medical educational institutions (Department of Foreign Languages).
Study of mechanisms of occurrence, development and treatment of vertebrogenic diseases of the spine, multiple sclerosis; study of processes of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant blood activity in acute cerebrovascular disorders and the state of the autonomic nervous system in workers of enterprises and inhabitants of the territories contaminated with sulfur compounds (Department of Nervous Diseases).
Study of lipid metabolism, formation of adaptive reactions in conditions of hypochondria and hypercholesterolemia (department of faculty therapy).
